Melasma/Pigmentation Issues
Melasma is a common skin disorder in women characterized by brown patches on the face especially the cheek, forehead and upper lip areas. It can sometimes be associated with pregnancy, hormonal changes or hormone replacement therapy.
Other pigmentation issues include Solar Lentigos (commonly referred to as age spots, brown spots, sun spots or liver spots) and PIH (Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation). PIH is common in skin of colour and refers to the darkening of skin after a scratch, bite, pimple or any other irritation.
All of these conditions are caused by excessive activation of the melanocytes which are specialized cells in the dermis of the skin responsible for skin colour. This is a challenging condition and the most effective treatment is a multi-pronged approach using a variety of medical grade skincare products (such as the Vivier Hyperpigmentation Program) and non-invasive procedures such as chemical peels. Dr. Sloan and the team at Niagara Dermatology Centre will be able to assess your specific skin concerns and create a personalized treatment program for you.
